Can you remove your Facebook account from Oculus Quest?

Best answer: Not yet, but soon. Meta changed the requirement to log in with a Facebook account and will be providing new, social media-free Meta accounts for users in August 2022.

When forever doesn’t mean forever

Up until now, Meta required a Facebook account just to use an Oculus Quest or Oculus Quest 2 (opens in new tab). Thankfully, the company reversed its policy and will have users log in with a Meta account (opens in new tab) instead of a Facebook account starting August 2022.

That means, once this update becomes available, users will actually be required to remove their Facebook accounts from their Oculus Quest or Meta Quest 2 headsets and, instead, log in with a social media-free Meta account.

This Meta account appears to be similar to the original Oculus accounts system and is used only to manage payments and ensure digital ownership of games and apps.

Users can optionally link their Facebook or Instagram accounts to a Meta account for easier social media access, but there’s no requirement to do this just to use Meta’s VR services.

A better way to play

With the advent of Meta accounts, users will no longer have to worry about their social media behavior affecting their ability to play VR. With the current policy, users who receive a Facebook account ban lose access to their Meta Quest headsets and all purchased games or apps. This policy caused a number of problems (and unhappy users) since it was originally enacted in 2020 with the Quest 2 launch.

Starting in August 2022, a user’s social media account can be optionally linked to a Meta Horizon profile but will not affect a user’s ability to play on their headsets, even if they are banned from linked social media accounts. That’s because a Meta account is a separate account that’s only used for managing payments and a user’s library of games and apps.

This should solve the conundrum many players found themselves in since the Quest 2 launched. Similarly, a Meta Horizon profile is a separate social presence that includes a user’s name, username, and digital avatar and is also separate from their Facebook account. That means you won’t have to worry about your Facebook friends following you in VR if you don’t want them to.
